Rolling-Fork is a historic town located in Sharkey County in west-central Mississippi. The population is approximately 2,400 residents. People are friendly and roots run deep in this town in Mississippi's Deep Delta region. The iconic Teddy Bear was inspired by a political cartoon depicting President Theodore Roosevelts refusal to shoot a black bear while on a hunt just a few miles from Rolling Fork in 1902. The town of Rolling Fork celebrates this legacy with the Great Delta Bear Affair, a festival held annually on the 4th Saturday in October. Each year, the festival features artist Dayton Scoggins who carves a bear from a huge cypress log that is donated to Rolling Fork. The bears can be seen throughout town. Rolling Fork is also the birthplace of McKinley Muddy Waters Morganfield. The "Blues Shack" just behind the Sharkey County Courthouse, is reminiscent of the type of "shotgun house" Morganfield would have lived in. The Muddy Waters Memorial Gazebo is on the courthouse square, and murals throughout the downtown feature images of the Blues man. A Visitors Center and Museum is also located just off Highway 61, open Thursday-Saturday. Rolling Fork is home to The Barge Lake Recreation and Primitive Campground area, which offers RV (gravel) sites, primitive tent sites, hiking, biking trails and horseback riding trails. For history buffs, the prehistoric Indian mounds that dot the area are a must-see. One group of mounds known as the Rolling Fork Mounds is the latest known occupation of Native American mounds in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Rolling Fork is also host to the Deep Delta Festival, which showcases local and regional musicians.

Rolling Fork Weather & Climate

West-central Mississippi has a subtropical climate that is warm and wet year round. There is a mild change of seasons with hot, humid summers, short, sunny winters and transitional autumn and springs. This region experiences rain showers and humidity year-round, although it's mostly felt during summer when heat combined humidity makes it uncomfortable. The weather can be unpredictable in west-central Mississippi, and cold spells have been experienced in winter, but snowfall is rare. The best time to visit the area is between February and April, when the heat and humidity are not at peak levels. June is the start of hurricane season, but mostly affects areas closer to the coast. Tornadoes are another possibility.
